Physical Plant Benchmarking Study

When planning for college and university growth, it may be helpful to compare your institution with other colleges and universities of a similar size. A survey of building trends among these institutions may provide insight and direction for growth plans.  The goal of this survey is to define some common indicators that apply to a college and university campus and in particular, to the peer group that makes up the ABACC constituency. These benchmarking results are good indicators for colleges and universities to use in growth planning - particularly in the master planning process.  All of the indicators are based on full-time equivalent students (FTE).  Therefore, growth needs may be predicted using the survey results.

Institutions may compare themselves with their peers for purposes of validation or making improvements.  The results should aid college and university administrators in their annual strategy sessions - evaluating their campus and formulating plans for growth. Overall building square footage has been analyzed and broken down into five separate categories. This information is helpful in planning for facility growth for academic, residential, athletic, student services and other space needs. 

Like most surveys, the recorded results are the averages of all respondents. There are reasons for deviation from these averages for any given institution. However, the results give a good idea of what peer institutions are doing and what kind of resources are allocated to such things as land usage, site improvements and facilities.

The information compiled in this survey could be added in total or in part to an institution’s “dashboard” of indicators to help administrators evaluate current status and planning for future growth.
