Existing Facilities First: Impact on the Physical Plant

In less than a decade the way academic facilities and interior spaces are used has radically changed. It’s a reflection of the way 21st century students have been taught to learn. It’s also the result of newly introduced pre-professional and Vocational Ed programs existing alongside traditional liberal arts core curricula. Changes in course content coupled with new and flexible classroom technology is one way  campus decision-makers are responding to the way students and their parents assess the cost and benefits of a traditional liberal arts education. Doing more collaboration, with fewer students, in smaller spaces and equipping educators with classrooms that provide them with the utility to toggle back and forth between lectures, immersive learning and independent or remote study is the norm.

You probably have some existing buildings, systems and interior spaces on campus that aren’t utilized very well, or aren’t working at all. Before adding new building stock, college and university decision-makers could benefit by assessing how existing facilities and interior spaces can be renovated and modified to leverage the new normal.

Identify means and methods for: (a) documenting the obvious and hidden costs of complex renovation, (b) calculating the costs of doing nothing, (c) facilitating seamless move management, (d) designing in energy conservation, (e) integrating classroom, lab, and life safety technology, (f) engaging faculty and staff in planning, (g) engaging students, parents and donors, and (h) other important steps in making an Existing Facilities (EFF) approach work on your campus.
